Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven
but Nobody Wants to Die:

Bioethics and the Transformation of
Healthcare in America

In this talk, Professor Moreno will preview some of the topics he and Penn President Gutmann will discuss in their forthcoming book (Liveright/Norton, 2019).  From doctor-patient relations to medical experiments and the insurance system to genetics and neuroscience, the world of healthcare looks remarkably different now than it did in the 1950s.

The field that deals with ethical issues in medicine and the life sciences, known as bioethics, arrived on the scene in the late 1960s, just as many of these changes were coming about. These developments have had and will continue to have profound impacts on each of us, our companies, employers, retirees, doctors, hospitals and almost every aspect of our economy.

As Professor Moreno will show, we cannot understand the full complexity of the challenges we now face until we appreciate how much American healthcare has been transformed.
